Asbestos safety

  • What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in many building materials. It was traditionally used due to its strength and materials, until it was banned in 1999 due to its safety risks. Some of our properties may contain asbestos, and although the majority is very low risk, asbestos will only pose a risk if the materials become damaged or are deteriorating.

  • How we manage asbestos in our homes

Before you move into one of our homes, we'll check whether it has any asbestos containing materials. If any are found that pose a risk, we'll remove them before you move in. We may leave some asbestos containing materials in the home, but these will be very low risk and perfectly safe for you to live with if managed correctly.

  • What materials contain asbestos?

    • Floor tiles.
    • Textured coating (artex).
    • Asbestos cement sheets/water tanks.
    • Toilet cisterns and sink pads.

You should avoid cutting, drilling, sanding or using abrasive tools on any of these items.

  • What to do if you're concerned

If you have any concerns regarding asbestos, please contact us and ask to speak to the Asset Management Team.
