How you can apply to the Great British Insulation Scheme and save on your energy bill

If your home is in council tax band A-D and has a low energy-efficiency rating, you may be eligible for free or discounted insulation upgrades to heat your home and save on costs. Last year, the Government launched a £1 billion drive to help families with low incomes to become more energy-efficient through the Great British Insulation Scheme.

The scheme helps families in lower council tax bands with less energy-efficient homes by offering cost-effective upgrades to insulate their homes, cutting their annual energy bill by an average of between £300 to £400.

What is being offered?

There are several home installation options for those who are eligible for the GBIS scheme including:

 How does it all work?

You can check your eligibility for the scheme using the Government’s online checker, which will ask you a series of questions including how you heat your home and whether your home has solid or cavity walls. You’ll also need your total household income and the type of benefits anyone living in your property receives. Finally, an email address or phone number will be required so your energy supplier can contact you if you’re eligible.

If you rent your home from us, you’ll need our permission before you apply and before any insulation work can be done.

Once permission has been granted and you’ve applied via the online checker, your energy supplier will contact you to arrange an assessment of your property. If you need to pay anything for the work, you’ll be informed of this after the assessment has been made. You don’t have to go ahead with the work if you disagree with the assessment or costs.

Who is eligible for the GBIS?

If your council tax falls into band A-D and your home has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or below, you’re eligible for this additional support. The GBIS will run alongside the existing Energy Company Obligation (ECO) Scheme, which offers free home energy improvements including insulation, heat pumps and solar panels to families on low incomes.
