Case study: Oliver

Oliver gives us an insight into how his work experience placement has helped him decide on his future career plans.

When did you do your work experience placement and for how long?

I did work experience at Moat in July 2023.

What department did you do your work experience placement with?

My work experience placement took place within different teams of the Property Services department.

Why did you choose to work in that department?

I chose Property Services because I wanted to learn more about surveying and other aspects of building work at Moat. Ultimately, I wanted to understand what it meant to be a surveyor and work within the construction/property industry.

Tell us a bit about your week, what you got up to and what you learnt.

I worked closely with some of the trainee surveyors as well as the qualified surveyors to develop my knowledge in building surveying. This is an area that I am keen to learn more about and work in and study, so I found this to be really valuable. The surveyors showed me the day-to-day tasks they complete, the type of problems they solve, and I also got to experience what it was like to carry out a surveying test on an actual home.  Later in the week I went on site with a Project Manager to look at new buildings and properties, and also sat in on a meeting between Moat and a property developer, where they discussed future plans for the properties. The experience was incredibly eye opening and has further developed my interest in Building Surveying and Site management. It has encouraged me to find and pursue a degree apprenticeship in the construction industry.

What did you enjoy most about your placement?

I enjoyed working with the trainee surveyors and carrying out practice tests and surveys that surveyors would do on a day-to-day basis. This was most enjoyable as I got a feel for the job and what it would actually entail on an average day.

What did you learn about yourself during your work experience placement?

I learnt that I definitely have an interest in surveying and the experience helped to further develop my passion for construction.

What advice would you give to someone considering a placement at Moat?

I would 100% recommend work experience at Moat, especially if you have an interest in property services, construction, or the built environment. The support and knowledge the staff have, and the patience they have in educating people on what their role is made it a really enjoyable learning experience.

What’s your plans now that you’ve finished your work experience placement?

After my work experience at Moat, I knew I wanted to do an apprenticeship in either surveying or construction site management. I am currently completely my A levels and am looking at different apprenticeships that could be available for me to start in September 2024. I am exploring a variety of apprenticeship opportunities that will help me learn more, further develop my skillset and help me achieve a qualification in the construction industry.
