Our Bell Hammer retirement scheme in East Sussex is being rebuilt and named after a beloved local doctor. The development will be called Dennison Court, in honour of Dr Jim Dennison who lived and started his surgery there.
A spokesperson from the local tennis club who put forward the name for the development said: “Dr Dennison arrived in East Grinstead and set up his practice in 1938, working here until his retirement in 1977. He passed away in 2002 and as a well-respected doctor and Secretary of the medial committee at Queen Victoria Hospital, it is fantastic to hear that his name has been honoured by the Local Authority.”
The new development will replace the original 1970s Bell Hammer building to provide a contemporary scheme that better meets the needs of independent residents aged over 55. It will include 35 one and two-bedroom flats, contemporary communal areas and a stunning courtyard garden. The inside spaces will be designed by interior design firm Homesmith’s, who are taking inspiration from the local area for each floor, such as the colour scheme and artwork of Bluebell Railway.
Dennison Court will also offer a greater number of homes and will feature energy efficiency measures to make the development more sustainable. The first residents are expected to move in in November 2021.
Kim McGregor, our Head of Land, New Business and Development, said: “The redevelopment of Bell Hammer will provide high-quality homes for older people in the community. We look forward to completion and welcoming residents to the new older person’s independent living scheme.”
