Fire safety tips for the festive season

The festive season is a time for food, cosy fires and lots of sparkling lights. However, these things can all be dangerous and need extra precautions in place to keep you and your family safe.

1. Decorate in safe style. Ensure your decorations aren’t a fire hazard. If opting to use a real Christmas tree, be sure to keep it away from heat and water regularly, as it can become extremely flammable as the needles dry out.

2. Don’t overload electrical sockets. We know it’s fun to brighten up your home with sparkling lights, but overloading sockets can cause fires. Be sure to switch them off when you leave the room too.

3. Don’t leave the turkey unattended. Most fires start in the kitchen, so when cooking, keep a close eye on food and set reminders to regularly check on it.

4. Be sensible with fires. Please be extra careful when using heaters/fires to warm up. Use a fire guard to keep children safe, don’t leave unattended and keep away from anything flammable!

5. Check your smoke alarm! Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly, and replace any batteries as soon as needed. If you're a general needs customer, please report any faults immediately to Moat.
