Gas safety tips
Moat only use contractors and fitters who are on the gas safety register. When an engineer visits your home, always ask to see their identity card.
Never try a do-it-yourself repair on any gas pipe or appliance. You could be breaking the law and you could be putting yourself and others at risk.
Never block sources of ventilation, such as air-bricks, or obstruct flues.
Always follow the user instructions on any gas appliance.
If you smell gas or fumes:
• Do turn the gas off at the meter
• Do open windows
• Do extinguish naked flames
• Do not use electrical switches (such as light switches)
• Do call Transco immediately on 0800 111 999
All gas appliances require fresh air for the gas to burn correctly. For this reason never block or obstruct any air vents.
If you have double glazing or draught proofing make sure that there is still enough fresh air circulating for any heaters in the room; all fuel produces waste gases when it is burned. If the appliance does not have sufficient ventilation, carbon monoxide may be produced, which is very dangerous. Carbon monoxide may be present if the gas flame burns orange or yellow instead of the normal blue. If this occurs, you should switch off your appliance immediately. If carbon monoxide is present you may develop the following unexplained symptoms:
• Tiredness
• Drowsiness
• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Chest pains
• Nausea.
