Right to Acquire

This is a government scheme that allows social tenants to buy the home that they currently rent. Tenants who qualify for this scheme are entitled to receive a discount which is dependent on the area that you live in. The discounts for this scheme are fixed amounts published by the Government, and currently range from £9,000 to £16,000.

You must be a tenant living in one of our homes and have an “assured” or “secured” tenancy agreement. The property that you live in must have been built or purchased by a registered social landlord, with a social housing grant, provided by the Housing Corporation, on or after 1 April 1997. You must have spent a total of five years as a public sector tenant, if your first public sector tenancy was created on or after 18 January 2005.  If your tenancy was created after this date, you do not have the Right to Acquire until you have spent a total of five years as a public sector tenant.

For more information on the scheme, please see the booklet “Guide to the Right to Acquire”, which is published by the Housing Corporation.

For more information please see our Right to Acquire leaflet.

If you would like to apply for the Right to Acquire, you can download the application form (RTA1) here.  When completing the application, it is important that you answer all questions fully and accurately, as this information is used to ascertain whether or not you have the Right to Acquire.   You will also need to complete and sign an Insolvency Declaration Form for everyone applying for the Right to Acquire.  You will need to send the completed forms to the Home Ownership Team at our central office in Dartford.

Alternatively, you can contact a member of the Home Ownership Team, by telephone on 0845 359 6161, or email mhoadmin@moat.co.uk.

Your home is at risk if you do not keep up rent and mortgage repayments or payments on other loans secured on it.

Please note that the value of properties can go down as well as up.
