Tackling anti-social behaviour... Together!

We are committed to working within communities to create safe and attractive environments for people to live in. We want to do everything we can to prevent anti-social behaviour before it starts. We have published a leaflet that explains the options available to residents who may be experiencing problems due to anti-social behaviour.

We will work in partnership with residents and other agencies to resolve situations where people's lives are being affected by the unacceptable behaviour of others. In certain situations we have no choice but to take a tough stance. We will not let the actions of a few ruin the efforts of most people who want to live their lives in a pleasant, peaceful and safe environment.

What should you do if you have a complaint about your neighbours?

If you have a complaint about someone living near you, first of all you should try to resolve the problem directly with that person before you contact us.

Talking to the person and explaining the situation can help them to understand the impact that it is having on you and the discomfort it is causing. Efforts to compromise and trying to see each other's point of view often go a long way towards resolving the problem harmoniously among yourselves.

Respect standard

We have recently signalled our continuing commitment to tackling anti-social behaviour by signing up to the government's respect standard for housing management.

By signing up to the standard we make the following public commitments. We will:

  • Treat anti-social behaviour seriously and follow through on all the promises we make to prevent it
  • Involve residents in making decisions about how we tackle anti-social behaviour
  • Use prevention and early intervention
  • Provide support for victims and witnesses
  • Protect communities through swift enforcement
  • Help tackle the causes of anti-social behaviour

Diary sheets

If you are unable to resolve issues of anti-social behaviour by talking to your neighbour, you will need to keep a record of all anti-social acts committed by them using diary sheets. You can download diary sheets from the link below.

We can only act against culprits if we have evidence and keeping a diary allows you to gather evidence of anti-social behaviour. Everything you write down will be treated in the strictest of confidence and we will not use the information you provide to us for enforcement action without your express permission. It is therefore essential that the diary you keep is an accurate record of any incidents that occur. When you feel you have gathered substantial evidence, please give the diary sheets to your Neighbourhood Officer.
